The NSE Nifty 50 rose 312.40 points, or 1.32%, finishing at 24,031.70. The rally followed a fall of almost 6% in Brent crude to around $95 a barrel as investors responded to tentative signs of progress towards a US\u2013Iran agreement and the possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>For India, the relationship between oil and equities is unusually important. The country imports most of the crude it consumes, which means a sustained rise in global prices can affect the trade balance, the rupee, inflation, interest-rate expectations and corporate margins at the same time. A meaningful fall in oil therefore gives the market several reasons to move higher, even before the effect appears in company earnings.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>That explains the strength of the reaction. It does not yet make one trading session a new bull market.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>Why Lower Oil Matters So Much To India<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A lower crude price reduces the amount Indian refiners and importers must pay in foreign currency. In principle, this can ease pressure on the current-account deficit and the rupee while reducing the risk that more expensive fuel feeds into transport, production and consumer prices.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The currency moved in the same direction as equities during the 25 May rally. The rupee strengthened by 47 paise to close at 95.23 against the US dollar, compared with 95.70 in the previous session. India VIX, a gauge of expected market volatility, also fell sharply, reflecting a broader improvement in risk appetite.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>These movements matter because oil, inflation and interest rates are connected in the Indian market. Persistently expensive energy can raise input costs and make it harder for the Reserve Bank of India to maintain supportive monetary conditions. Softer crude gives policymakers more room, although the effect depends on how long the decline lasts and how much of it reaches domestic fuel and transport costs.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The later market reaction in June illustrated the same mechanism. By 24 June, Indian benchmarks had gained roughly 4% over nine sessions following a preliminary US\u2013Iran peace agreement, while crude prices had fallen 16.6% during that period. The Nifty closed at 24,021.65 and the Sensex at 76,991.22 as softer oil and reduced expectations of an imminent interest-rate increase supported equities.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>Banks And Carmakers Led The Rally<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The strongest part of the 25 May advance came from sectors that stood to benefit either directly or indirectly from easing inflation pressure.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Public-sector banks, private banks and financial-services stocks outperformed, while automobile and property shares also attracted buyers. The Bank Nifty gained more than 2%, and all major sector indices apart from consumer goods finished higher. Mid-cap stocks rose approximately 0.9%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 added around 1.4%.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Financial stocks benefit from a softer inflation outlook because it reduces the immediate risk of higher interest rates, weaker credit demand and rising borrower stress. Banks also carry considerable weight in India\u2019s principal indices, so concentrated buying in large lenders can move the Sensex and Nifty significantly.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Automotive companies face a different calculation. Lower fuel prices can improve the economics of vehicle ownership, particularly for commercial fleets and price-sensitive consumers. Softer crude can also reduce costs for petroleum-derived materials, logistics and certain manufacturing inputs. That does not translate automatically into higher margins, but it improves the backdrop for both demand and costs.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Eicher Motors, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Adani Enterprises and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles were among the notable Nifty gainers on 25 May. Max Healthcare, ONGC, Hindalco, Infosys and Bajaj Auto were among the session\u2019s weaker names.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The inclusion of ONGC among the laggards is a useful reminder that falling crude does not help every Indian company. Oil producers may receive less for what they sell, while downstream industries, transport operators and consumers stand to gain from lower energy costs. The effect depends on where a business sits in the value chain.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>The Rally Was Also A Geopolitical Trade<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>It would be misleading to describe the advance as a simple response to improved corporate fundamentals. The immediate catalyst was political.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Markets were pricing in the possibility that an agreement between the United States and Iran could reduce disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial share of global oil supply moves. Reports of progress were sufficient to push crude below $100 a barrel for the first time in more than two weeks, even though the credibility and durability of the negotiations remained uncertain.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>This distinction matters for investors. An improvement driven by audited earnings, stronger cash flow or rising domestic demand can be assessed against company data. A rally driven by diplomatic expectations can reverse quickly when negotiations stall, military tensions return or shipping routes are threatened again.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>That risk did not disappear after the May rebound. Subsequent sessions continued to respond sharply to developments in the Middle East, demonstrating that crude remained a source of volatility rather than a permanently resolved concern. On 8 July, for example, a renewed oil-price surge contributed to the Nifty\u2019s largest one-day fall in more than three months.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The lesson is not that geopolitical rallies should be ignored. It is that their assumptions must be monitored more closely than the headline index gain.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>What The Move Means For ETFs<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>For ETF investors, the broad-market effect was straightforward. Funds tracking the Nifty 50 or Sensex would have participated in the rally because of their exposure to the financial, industrial and automotive companies that pushed the indices higher.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The sector argument is more nuanced than the original market commentary suggests.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>A financial-services or bank ETF may benefit when falling oil reduces inflation and interest-rate concerns, particularly because large lenders occupy an important position in Indian equity markets. An automobile ETF may also respond positively to expectations of lower fuel costs and improving consumer demand.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>An energy ETF does not necessarily benefit from the same development. Funds heavily exposed to upstream oil producers can come under pressure as crude prices decline. Broadly labelling energy ETFs as beneficiaries therefore ignores the difference between producers, refiners, fuel retailers, utilities and energy-consuming industries.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Transport is also not a single investable category. Airlines, logistics businesses, shipping companies and vehicle manufacturers have different fuel exposures, pricing models and hedging policies. Lower oil can reduce costs, but the benefit may be absorbed by fare competition, weaker demand, currency depreciation or existing fuel contracts.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Investors using UCITS or US-listed India ETFs should also examine currency exposure. A stronger rupee can improve returns for an unhedged foreign investor when Indian assets are translated into euros, Swiss francs, sterling or dollars. A later reversal in the currency can offset part of the local-market gain.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>For that reason, the relevant question is not simply whether an ETF includes Indian stocks. Investors need to understand its index methodology, sector weights, concentration in large financial groups, treatment of dividends, currency exposure and total cost.<\/span><\/p><h2><span>Oil Is Only One Part Of The Indian Equity Story<\/span><\/h2><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The 25 May rally offered a clear demonstration of India\u2019s sensitivity to imported energy. Lower crude improved the outlook for inflation, the rupee and monetary policy at the same time, prompting a broad repricing of banks, automotive companies and other domestically exposed businesses.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>It did not remove the market\u2019s other constraints.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>Foreign portfolio flows, company earnings, valuations, domestic credit conditions, the monsoon and consumer demand remain important. By late June, weaker-than-average rainfall had already emerged as a new market concern because of its potential effect on rural incomes, food inflation and consumption.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fundavia.com\/fr\/fonds-de-placement\/fonds-de-capital-risque\/transcript-jean-eric-salata-chair-of-eqt-group\/\">Valuation<\/a> is equally relevant. A positive macroeconomic story does not make every Indian share attractive at every price. Strong structural growth can coexist with expensive multiples, uneven earnings and periods in which international investors withdraw capital.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><span>The more useful interpretation of the Sensex\u2019s 1,000-point gain is therefore narrower. A fall in oil removed one of the largest immediate pressures on Indian assets, and the market responded quickly. Whether that relief develops into a durable advance depends on crude remaining contained, geopolitical tensions easing and corporate earnings providing evidence that the improvement extends beyond sentiment.<\/span><\/p><p><span>For ETF investors, the session strengthened the case for India as a distinct allocation rather than a generic emerging-market trade.
